Reolink Argus 3 Pro outdoor security camera is affordable and comes with many features, including intelligent motion detection, 2K video and dual-band WiFi. It also supports Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands. The camera was able to record video at no cost and offers cloud storage.
However, its battery life is not as good, and it does not work with IFTTT. The Wyze Cam V3, our Editors’ Choice, isn’t wireless, records 1080p video, but offers better third-party support at a more reasonable price.
We were blown away by the Reolink Argus 3 Pro’s video quality during testing. It produced some of our best security cameras. The Argus Pro 3 is a clear competitor to the Arlo 4 in terms of overall video quality. It shares many features, including a luminous LED spotlight and 1440p video resolution. Wire-free operation costs below $80.
The explicit video it produces in both daytime and at night is a big plus. When we tried it under different lighting conditions, there weren’t any noticeable distortions in the recordings or live views. We noticed some lag in the live feed, but it was not due to the camera.
Argus Pro’s video is beautiful, but the camera’s field-of-view is only 122o. This is narrower than the 130o average on Ring and Arlo cameras. This camera’s 160o field-of-view is smaller than the Arlo Pro 4’s. It may need to be placed more carefully to get the best view. It is the only area where it falls short of Arlo Pro 4 in terms of video quality.
Recognition is not for individuals but for people.
No package detection
The Argus Pro 3 Pro provides vehicle and person detection. If you have inserted a microSD card, it triggers an event. Overall, motion detection is excellent. Although I received a few false positives, the clips did not show an individual on my camera. I was able to look at the app by clicking the link. My phone received notifications quickly, which is crucial for security cameras.
You can always go back to see what happened if you missed a notification. This is where the problem lies. The default clip length is eight seconds. You can choose a maximum of 30 seconds. Some events won’t get captured at all, which is frustrating.
Only a person can be detected. It cannot recognize familiar faces or determine if packages have been left. If you wish to exclude or include a particular frame area, there is no way to create detection zones.
Video capture does not include still images. You can’t capture an image from the app if you wish to do so manually.
This model has a few recording options: motion, schedule and time-lapse.
Motion Recording, But No Motion Zones
The Argus Pro’s design features a dome-shaped infrared motion sensor below the lens. This sensor allows the camera to detect motion in total darkness without the need for video-based motion triggers or infrared LEDs that would quickly drain the rechargeable batteries.
While we appreciate the ability to adjust the camera’s motion sensitivity, motion zones are not available. Although we suspect Reolink removed motion zones to increase battery life, since they rely on video, it is still disappointing.
Motion zones are great because they allow you to set the camera to only record when there is motion in a specific area of the frame like a sidewalk, window or door. This can be used to ignore cars passing by or pets too active in the house.
Reolink Argus 3 Pro can distinguish between people and vehicles despite not having motion zones. You can also choose to ignore specific categories to reduce the number of videos and notifications.
You can set up when your motion recording option activates based on specific times throughout the week. This allows you to sync recording with your regular work hours or soccer practice times. We like that you can set when the camera records by using the vehicle or person detection for more control.
While time-lapse photography can be a security aid, it can make it difficult to identify different people. We like the fact that Reolink understands that security cameras can be used for creative purposes and has included this feature in the Argus3 Pro.
Time-lapse is a fun way of tracking long-term progress, such as plants growing or clouds moving through the sky.
The product offers two storage options for the video: cloud storage and local storage.
The Argus Pro can support microSD cards up to 128 GB (around $24), which is a significant advantage over other competitors that only allow 32 GB and 64 GB. This is a good thing considering that the 1440p video captures memory cards faster than the 1080p models.
You don’t have to pay a monthly fee for local storage. Instead, you can buy a MicroSD Card and use it as a local storage option. The camera doesn’t need an internet connection. Its battery lasts longer since it isn’t constantly uploading videos.
Reolink provides free cloud storage for a single camera and up to 1GB of video clips for a maximum of one week. This is a lot more than the free cloud storage offered by Wyze or YI, which have restrictions on how long clips may be.
Cloud subscriptions can also be purchased by Reolink, which increases storage capacity, video history, and the number of cameras. Reolink offers competitive cloud pricing for plans starting at $10 per month or less, but only if you have multiple cameras. While the plans above $10 per month are comparable to brands such as YI and Arlo, they don’t offer the same features or unlimited camera capacity as Ring and Google Nest.
Argus 3 Pro’s Power Source
How Long Can the Reolink Argus 3 Pro Battery Last?
Reolink claims that the battery can last up to four weeks without the need for a solar panel to be used as usual. Average usage is recording multiple videos daily and viewing live feeds via the Reolink app.
We found that the battery of this camera can last longer in standby mode. The camera was left uncharged for nearly three months and retained over half of its charge.
This is a remarkable figure, considering that the Arlo 4 was left on standby for only two months and needed to be charged. You can achieve impressive results by setting up a schedule that balances recording time and standby time, especially if you add a solar panel to the battery.
Reolink is the best solar security camera because it doesn’t consider solar accessories to be expensive upgrades that cost $50 or more. The company’s solar panel add-ons are $30 and more affordable than the options offered by Ring and Arlo.
A solar panel can be connected to reduce the number of times you have to remove the Reolink camera every year. This is especially important because you cannot swap out the battery.
Smart Home Compatibility
Reolink Argus 3 Pro works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa smart displays such as the Echo Show or Google Nest Hub. You can ask your voice assistant to view your camera’s live feed, but it doesn’t interact directly with your smart home in any other way. This is still very useful for checking on your kids at home or getting a hands-free view of the camera feed after receiving a push notification from the Reolink App.
The Reolink Support Center has a wealth of videos and articles. These articles provide helpful diagrams and help you solve common problems. The Support Center is simple to use, and the search bar returns precise results based on your model or the problem you are having.
Although the Reolink Forum can be used as an alternative to the support center, it is more challenging to read than the support articles. Reolink can be reached via email if you cannot find the answer in the forum or support center.
It’s also impressive that the camera comes with a 2-year warranty. Although two years may not seem like a lot, it is twice as long as a standard security camera warranty.
Installation and Setup of the Argus 3 Pro
The Reolink Argus 3 Pro setup is simple, thanks to the clear instructions provided in the Reolink App. Connecting the camera to WiFi took less than five minutes. The app will tell you to charge the battery overnight.
The camera came with three mounting brackets, making it easy to install.
The security bracket attaches to your camera’s back and can be attached to a wall using screws or a hanging mount. It can also fit on a tree or pole with the loop strap. This mounting method is the best and most stable. It is also the best for outdoor mounting.
A magnetic bracket attaches to the back of your camera with a strong magnet. It makes it easy to mount or reposition the frame. Although it attaches to surfaces in the same manner as the security brackets, the magnetic bracket might be more suitable indoors or at places where curious hands can’t remove it from its bracket.
The stand bracket is essentially a plastic cradle that holds the camera upright while it rests on a surface. It was convenient for indoor testing, although it isn’t as adjustable as other brackets. It might still work on a table or bookcase for indoor monitoring or an indoor camera.
Should You Buy It?
Pro is a high-quality security camera that offers excellent features and performance. It’s easy to set up and use and very affordable. The camera produces exceptional video quality and has a wide field of view. It also has night vision and two-way audio, both advantageous features. Overall, the Reolink Argus 3 Pro is a great security camera worth the price.
