Wyze Cam V3 review
- Wired power
- Compact design
Wyze Cam 3 is an indoor/outdoor wired security camera with IP65 water resistance. It can withstand rain and low-pressure water flow. However, it will be damaged by high-pressure sprays and submersion. It can also withstand temperatures ranging from -5 to 113°F.
The Wyze V3 measures 2.05x2x2.3 inches/5.2×5.1×58.5cm (h x w x d). It is small and boxy. However, you can pull it up from the bottom to expose a small adjustable stand which adds up to 1 inch (25mm).
The microSD card slot can be found on the back of the camera. It can hold cards up to 32GB. This allows you to set up 24/7 continuous video recording. That will enable you to record for at least three days.
The camera will only record 12 seconds if you choose to skip a monthly subscription to cloud storage. After that, it will wait for five minutes before it can trigger another event. Insert a microSD card into this camera and tell it to record the event. This will ensure that the entire length of the footage is saved to local storage.
The V3 is light at 3.5oz/98.8g. It can easily be thrown or lost if it is not secured in its place. The V3 comes with a 3M adhesive, a small magnetic plate to stick it to other surfaces and a pair screws to hang it upside down.
This is unlike a wireless camera that requires a nearby outlet in order to work. The V3 comes with a power adapter, a 6-foot/1.8-meter USB to micro-USB cable, and a rubber sleeve protecting the connection from water seepage.
It does not have the privacy shutter found on other home security cameras like the Arlo Essential Indoor Cam. The app makes this a problem because it allows you to remotely switch on the camera while disabling its ‘On’ LED indicator. This leaves anyone within its view unaware that it is recording.
It takes only a few minutes to set up Wyze Cam v3. The Wyze app can be downloaded and created as a Wyze account. The QR code generated by the app pairs the camera with your account making it easy to sync and activate the camera.

Audio and video quality
The Wyze Cam Pan V3 delivers crisp images whether you are indoors, outdoors, at night or in combination with all four. The V3 also features a motion tracker, which tracks any movement on the screen.
We captured motion far away while testing the video. It was tested in a house near a busy street. It detected cars passing and alerted us when someone was walking near the home. It was our tester, but don’t be alarmed.
Color night vision
Wyze advertisers used night vision to color this camera. However, it appeared half as often when the camera was outdoors. Light is the key ingredient. The feature will not work in dark indoor spaces like the living room or basement. For color night vision, make sure the Wyze Cam is within reach of street lamps or any other light source.
This camera’s audio is very fuzzy. It’s not difficult to understand words or have a conversation with the speaker, but it isn’t high quality. The volume of the speaker is approximately 80 decibels. This is loud enough to grab someone’s attention but not loud enough that they are scared off.
The recording audio quality was very distorted when we spoke through the camera. This is a common flaw in all cameras that we tested. The same problem was found in our top picks, the Reolink Argus 3 Pro.
- The clear HD footage can be viewed both day and night.
- A 130-degree field captures a lot of detail
- Sound detection is not reliable
The V3 camera, like all Wyze devices, is simple to install. Download the mobile app and create an account. Then, tap the plus icon at the top left corner of your home screen. Tap Add Device, then tap Cameras to select Wyze Cam V3 from that list.
Follow the instructions on the screen to connect the camera to a power outlet. Once the LED flashes red, confirm that it is connected. Next, tap the Setup button at the bottom of your cam. When you hear “ready for connection”, click Next in the app. Enter the password and select Wi-Fi network. Then scan the QR code with Wyze Cam to add the cam to your Alexa device and network. You can give the camera a name, and it is ready to go.
The Wyze Cam 3 was tested indoors and out. The HD footage was sharp enough to identify people you know but not sharp enough to spot strangers on your property. While it is easier to capture good footage when they are still in front of the camera, they can look blurry and oversaturated further away. It was still quite acceptable for a budget camera.
The Wyze Cam V3 excels in night vision. It switches between color night vision (provided by the starlight sensor) and black-and-white infrared depending on the amount of ambient light.
The Wyze Cam 3 didn’t have enough light to produce color footage in a dark room. However, if the Wyze Cam v3 was placed outside, the moonlight or nearby street lights provided enough light to create precise, vivid footage all night.
A 130-degree field view was also impressive. It could detect movement within a 40-foot range from left to right, 15 feet away from the cam. Although it appears only to see straight ahead, its design allows it to monitor a wider area. Likely, would-be robbers will also think they are out of sight.
The v3 recognizes movements with high sensitivity and is consistent in its recognition. The camera can be almost too good: when pointed at a tree outside, the cam sent out one after another as the wind moved the leaves.
This is not an issue if you have the Cam Plus subscription. The Cam Plus subscription allows you to set your camera only to detect Wyze AI Events. This means that your camera will only be alerted when it spots a person or package.
You can also disable these notifications if you don’t want your cam flagging each time a car passes you or your catwalks across the room. The AI was reliable because it registered people and randomly assigned pets to them on rare occasions.
To put it mildly, the Wyze Cam V3 sound detection performed below its peers. It registered very few sounds even at 100 percent sensitivity. This was despite people talking in the next room and Mass Effect players blowing up in the same room. Alerts were only activated by the loudest voices located near the camera.
It would most likely hear broken glass and a fire alarm. However, motion detection is the best method to detect intruders. The sounds it recorded are very staticky, and the spoken words can be challenging to understand when replayed.
- It’s easy to navigate
- Customizable motion detection zones
- Several features require a subscription service
You can use the Wyze app to protect your home with various tools. Some of these tools can only be accessed through a Wyze Cam Plus subscription. This may not be an issue for you.
You’ll find a screenshot of each connected cam in the Home tab. Tap the screenshot to activate the cam and wait for it to click. You can also change the resolution of the video, take a picture or record the feed, start two-way audio and turn off the camera.
Each camera has its own settings. You can adjust the event sensitivity and trigger a notification. You can create Rules for each camera. These include setting the time when it turns on and turning off or activating alarms when the camera detects someone or opens a door. Each cam feed can be divided into 144 detection areas, so you can target notifications that only trigger when motion is detected in that area.
Overall, the Wyze app was very user-friendly. We would only point out that tapping on an event notification can sometimes be confusing. Tap the pop-up to see that a person has been detected at 12:00 pm. This will take you to a live stream. You may see a pop-up indicating that the person has been removed.
Navigate to the Events tab and away from the live stream to avoid this. After refreshing the page, the new event will not be visible. You’ll then tap the possibility to return to the live stream. However, you can scroll back at the original motion. It is unclear why the notification does not take you to this screen.
The Wyze Cam V3 can be activated or deactivated with an Alexa command or Google Assistant command if you have an actual smart home. You can also trigger bright lights through IFTTT commands using its motion alerts.
Wyze Cam v3 Home Automation
Wyze has only a handful of smart home integrations
Wyze offers a variety of smart home integrations, including Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. You can view your camera’s live feed on a smart display such as the Amazon Echo Show. Wyze cameras can also be used with intelligent routines set up via your Echo or Google Nest Hub.
Although the Wyze Cam V3 is not compatible with Apple HomeKit (but many cameras do), it works with Apple HomeKit. Eufy cameras are recommended if you love home kits.
